My most recent slideshow is on a children's yoga class at St. Michael's Country Day School in Newport. For this project, I attended the class a few times (gathering both photos and audio), interviewed the teacher, and produced the project myself (which is what I typically do anyway). It was really fun to spend time with these children and their teacher. From the childhoods of my parents to these youths today, the expectations and demands upon children have changed in many ways. From heavy backpacks and hours of homework to a myriad of extracurricular activities, life is fast paced and full for children today. Yoga teacher Ann Lewis-Hemeon hopes that her class will offer children a moment to slow down and breathe.

My editor asked a reporter and I if we wanted to do an overnight assignment on a youth group doing a homeless simulation for raise money for homelessness. The only answer we could possibly have was a resounding yes! This was a really cool assignment to do and the kids were great. From 7pm to 7am, they stayed outside around a burn barrel and slept in sleeping bags and cardboard boxes for the night. Up in Rhode Island, it gets pretty cold in the winter... so this experience was a quite uncomfortable and really opened your eyes to the challenges of being homeless. Yet in the midst of the discomfort, these are still teenagers and they will always find a way to smile and have fun.

The student athletes at Indiana University host children from the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington for a day at the ball park. This was an interesting video to create because I was not able to photograph/video the children in an clearly identifiable way, yet I still wanted to capture the essence of the event. I believe this video does just that.

VIDEO: The $10 Million Dollar Piggy Bank

Among my broadcast classes at Indiana University, I was in a television news course that broadcast a weekly student-produced program WTIU NewsForum. This was a great experience for me to learn how to pitch story ideas and produce them under tight deadlines. 'The $10 Million Dollar Piggy Bank' is about the induction of Indiana University president Michael McRobbie and the president's fund that he received to jump start his proposed improvements for the university.

VIDEO/SLIDESHOW: IU Basketball Senior Night

JUGGLING!

SO-- One night at IU, I decided to see how difficult it would be to both shoot video and photos at a basketball game. It was actually really challenging and I learned several lessons from it. I learned that I can do both in one assignment, but I also realized that it's much better to do this on a longer shoot or an ongoing story, rather than a short basketball game. I focused on getting the still images first and foremost because I was shooting the game for our student newspaper, the IDS. Video came secondary and enabled me to rip audio from the video footage for my slideshow. I was new with photographing sports at this time and my basketball shots have gotten much better since then as you can see on my photo blog. The main difficulty in trying to gather still and video simultaneously is that it detracts from the quality of the finished product. Though on a tight deadline and in a brief assignment situation, gathering stills and video isn't the best idea, I do think that both can be done well given the proper time and assignment.

AUDIO: Portsmouth Super Fan

Since beginning my one-year internship at the Newport Daily News, I have helped the newspaper begin its journey into online multimedia. From introducing my fellow photographers to SoundSlides to working alongside them gathering audio, I enjoy creating both independent and joint projects. Part of learning multimedia is sharing what you know with others and gaining their insight.

This slideshow was a joint effort between Newport Daily News photographer Jacqueline Marque and myself. Jacqueline approached me with the story idea of Portsmouth High School's notable super fan, Bob Crudup. While she photographed Mr. Crudup, I gathered audio through interviews and ambient sound.
